What veneers are
A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape or colour. Veneers are one of the options on our crowns and veneers page, and they suit chipped, worn or discoloured front teeth.
We do not publish a veneer figure in this article. Veneers are priced per tooth, and the exact cost depends on the material and the work needed, so it is confirmed at your consultation.
The types of veneer
Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and bonded to the tooth. They are long-lasting and can look very natural. Composite bonding is tooth-coloured resin built up on the tooth, often in a single visit. It suits smaller repairs and may need touching up sooner than porcelain.
Enamel and preparation
MouthHealthy notes that veneers require removing a little enamel from the tooth. This is part of why the decision is made after an examination, not before. We check that the tooth is healthy enough and that the change you want can be achieved without removing more than needed.
How long veneers last
The Leeds NHS guidance says a crown or veneer should normally last around 8 to 10 years if properly cared for. Porcelain veneers are commonly chosen for this reason, but the result still depends on how the veneer is cared for and how the bite works.
What changes the price
The type of veneer is the first factor. The number of teeth is the second, because each veneer is priced separately. Preparation, lab work and any follow-up checks complete the picture.

What to expect at each visit
The first visit covers the examination, the preparation under local anaesthesia, and impressions or a scan. A temporary covering may be fitted while the final veneers are made.
The second visit fits and bonds the final veneers. We check the shade, the shape and the bite before the veneers are fixed in place.

Are veneers painful to fit?
Preparation is done under local anaesthesia, so the procedure is comfortable. The tooth may be sensitive for a few days afterwards.
Do veneers need a root canal first?
Not usually. A root canal is needed only if the nerve is infected, and we tell you if it is required before planning.
Can I whiten my teeth after veneers?
Whitening does not change veneers, so plan any whitening before they are made. We will advise on the order when we plan your smile.
Are veneers reversible?
Veneers are generally not reversible, because a little enamel is removed to fit them. We explain this before you decide.
Will my veneers look too white?

How do I look after veneers?
Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth, and avoid biting hard objects such as ice or nut shells.
