Who needs scaling & polishing?
Anyone with tartar build-up, bleeding when brushing, bad breath that does not go away, or visible deposits near the gum line may need scaling.
Heavy tea or coffee drinkers and smokers often need it more often than others.
- Removes tartar above and below the gum line
- Reduces bleeding and gum inflammation
- Removes stains from tea, coffee and smoking
How the procedure works
- 1The dentist checks your gums and measures the spaces around each tooth.
- 2An ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments remove tartar from the surface and below the gum line.
- 3A polishing paste smooths the enamel and removes surface stains.
- 4We rinse the area and show you how to clean your teeth at home.
Pain and recovery
Scaling is usually comfortable. Some patients feel pressure, and we can numb the area if you need it.
Teeth may feel sensitive to cold or sweet foods for a few days. Use a desensitising toothpaste if the sensitivity lasts longer.
Price range
Scaling and polishing is priced after your examination, because the amount of tartar varies. Ask us on WhatsApp for the current guide.

Before and after care
- Avoid very hot or cold drinks on the day of treatment if your teeth feel sensitive.
- Brush gently with a soft brush and clean between your teeth daily.
- Plan a checkup every six months to keep the results.
Frequently asked questions
Does scaling damage tooth enamel?
When it is done correctly, scaling does not damage healthy enamel. We use gentle instruments and control the pressure carefully.
How often should I have scaling and polishing?
Most people benefit every six months, alongside a checkup. Smokers and people who build up tartar quickly may need it more often.
Will my teeth look whiter after polishing?
Yes, polishing removes surface stains, so teeth often look brighter straight away. It does not change the natural shade of the tooth.
Is scaling safe during pregnancy?
Routine cleaning is generally safe during pregnancy and is encouraged, since gum health matters. Tell us at your visit so we can plan the treatment together.
Will I need more than one scaling session?
Some people need more than one session, especially if gum inflammation is deeper. We will explain the plan at your visit.
