Tooth Extraction: What to Expect
Tooth extraction is sometimes the best option. Learn when it is needed, what recovery involves, and how costs are confirmed in Pakistan.
This guide relates to our tooth extraction treatment.
When is a tooth extraction needed?
A dentist will always try to keep a natural tooth where it is safe to do so. Extraction is usually recommended when a tooth is too badly broken or decayed to repair, when an infection does not respond to treatment, or when gum disease has loosened the tooth. Our tooth extraction service in Multan explains each option before any work begins.
Wisdom teeth are a common reason for extraction. These are the last molars, and they often do not have enough room to come through properly. A trapped or partly erupted wisdom tooth can cause pain, swelling and infection, and the NHS explains that wisdom teeth are often removed when they cause problems.
How is a tooth extracted?
Before the procedure, the dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray. This shows the position of the roots and any nearby structures, and it helps plan the treatment. For wisdom teeth, the X-ray is especially important.
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia, so you should feel pressure but not pain during removal. The tooth is loosened and removed carefully. In some cases, the tooth is divided into sections to make removal easier. Gauze is placed over the socket, and you will be asked to bite gently to help a clot form.
Most simple extractions are completed in one visit, and you can usually go home the same day.
What is recovery like after a tooth extraction?
Mild bleeding and swelling are normal for the first day or two. Bite gently on the gauze for the time advised, and avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting hard or using a straw, because these can disturb the clot. Swelling is often at its worst around the second or third day, then gradually settles.
Eat soft foods, such as yoghurt, soups, mashed potatoes and smoothies, for the first few days. Avoid very hot drinks on the day of the procedure. Keep your head slightly raised when you sleep to reduce swelling.
Pain relief is usually enough for discomfort. Follow the instructions on the packet, and tell the clinic if you cannot take a particular medicine.
What should I avoid after extraction?
Smoking can slow healing and increases the risk of a painful dry socket, where the clot is lost. Avoid smoking for as long as your dentist advises, and try to avoid it altogether while the area heals.
Do not touch the socket with your tongue or fingers, and avoid chewing on the side where the tooth was removed until it has healed. Clean the rest of your teeth gently, and keep up your normal routine elsewhere in the mouth.
How much does tooth extraction cost in Pakistan?
The cost of extraction depends on the tooth, how easily it comes out, and whether surgical removal is needed. Wisdom tooth removal is often priced separately because it can be more involved. We confirm the cost after the examination and X-ray, so you know the figure before treatment starts.
You can read more about the procedure on our tooth extraction page, and the prices overview explains how each service is priced.
Should I replace a missing tooth?
Replacing a missing tooth is often recommended, because gaps can allow neighbouring teeth to drift and make chewing harder. Options include dentures, bridges and dental implants. Your dentist will explain which option suits your mouth and your plans.
What if the tooth is hard to remove?
Some teeth, particularly wisdom teeth and teeth with long or curved roots, need more work to remove. In these cases, the dentist may make a small cut in the gum or divide the tooth into sections. This is called surgical extraction, and it is still done under local anaesthesia.
You may feel more pressure than with a simple extraction, and recovery can take a little longer. The dentist will explain what to expect before the procedure, so you know what is involved and can ask questions beforehand.
What should I do if bleeding continues after extraction?
Some oozing is normal for the first day. If bleeding continues heavily, do not panic. Sit upright, keep your head raised, and bite firmly on a clean piece of gauze or a damp tea bag for about twenty to thirty minutes. Avoid rinsing or spitting during this time.
If bleeding does not stop after this, or if it soaks through several pads quickly, contact the clinic straight away. Heavy bleeding that does not respond to pressure needs prompt assessment, and you should seek emergency care if you feel faint.
Dentures aur implants ke darmiyan kya farq hai?
Implant aam tor par mazboot aur mustaqil hota hai, lekin iske liye haddi ka sahi hona zaroori hai, aur ye ilaj zyada waqt leta hai.
Aap ke liye behtar kya hai, ye aap ki sehat, haddi ki halat aur zaroorat par munhasir hai. Hum pehle muayene karte hain aur phir wajah ke saath dono options samjhate hain.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?
Most people feel much better within a few days. The socket usually takes several weeks to fill in fully, and your dentist will advise on follow-up.
What is a dry socket?
A dry socket is when the blood clot in the socket is lost or does not form, which can cause a painful area a few days after extraction. Smoking and using straws increase the risk. Contact the clinic if pain increases after the second day.
Can I drive after a tooth extraction?
This depends on the anaesthetic and how you feel. Most people can drive once the numbness has worn off and they feel comfortable, but ask your dentist about your own situation.
Do I need antibiotics after an extraction?
Not usually. Antibiotics are prescribed only when there is an infection or a specific reason. Only take them if a dentist or doctor has prescribed them, and finish the course as advised.
