Braces for Adults: Is It Too Late?
Braces are often started in the teenage years, but adults can have them too. Here is what changes for adults and what we check first.
This guide relates to our braces treatment.
Is there an age limit for braces?
There is no fixed age limit. MouthHealthy says treatment often starts between the ages of 8 and 14, but healthy teeth can be treated at any age. Its guidance on smile options also notes that adults can have braces.
Many adults choose braces in Multan for crowding, spacing or a bite problem that has bothered them for years. The question is not usually age, but whether the teeth and gums are healthy enough for treatment.
What is different for adults
Adult teeth and gums are checked more carefully before treatment. Gum disease and bone loss are the main things we look for, because they affect how teeth can be moved and how long the result lasts.
Adults also have more choice of appliance. Ceramic braces, self-ligating braces and clear aligners are all used for adults, and the best choice depends on the bite and on how visible the appliance can be in your work or social life.
The time commitment
Most people spend one to three years in treatment, followed by a retainer, according to MouthHealthy. Adjustments are usually needed every four to six weeks. Adults should plan for this from the start, because regular visits are what keep treatment on track.
What we check first
Before treatment we check the gums, the bone around the teeth, and any fillings, crowns or old dental work that could be affected. We take photographs, X-rays and impressions, and we explain the options and the expected length of treatment.
What we check for adults
The table shows what we look at before adult braces or aligners. Each check affects the plan, the appliance and the time needed.
| What we check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Gum health | Gum disease needs treating before the teeth are moved |
| Bone around the teeth | The bone has to support the teeth as they move |
| Existing fillings and crowns | Old work can be affected by movement and may need changing |
| Appliance preference | Ceramic braces and clear aligners are less visible than metal |
| Time commitment | Regular visits or wear time are needed for the plan to work |
What to expect at each visit
Fitting takes one to two hours after the assessment. Adjustments usually take 20 to 30 minutes and come about every four to six weeks, so adults should plan these visits around work.
Soreness for three to five days after each change is common. Adults with sensitive teeth or gum problems should tell us, because we can adjust the plan to suit them.

Frequently asked questions
Can an adult with some gum problems have braces?
Often, once the gum problem is treated and under control. We check the gums first, and treat any problem before the braces are fitted.
Will adult braces look obvious?
They can be visible, but ceramic braces and clear aligners are less visible. We explain the options so you can choose the look that suits you.
Is it worth having braces as an adult?
That depends on your bite, your teeth and your goals. The assessment shows whether treatment would help and what it would involve.
Do adults need a retainer too?
Yes, a retainer is usually part of the plan for adults as well, to keep the result once active treatment ends.
Can I play sport with braces?
Yes. We advise a mouthguard for contact sports, and we will show you the right one to use.
Does age change how quickly braces work?
The time depends on the bite and the movement needed. Age alone does not decide how long treatment takes.
